Charles City, IowaEdith Heit, 90, of Charles City, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Reverend Carl Ries, Monsignor Stanley Hayek and Monsignor Walter Brunkan will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Roseville.
Edith Elizabeth Freidhof Schmitt Heit was born September 11, 1917, in Howard County, the daughter of Edward and Helena (Diederich) Freidhof. She graduated from Saint William’s School in Alta Vista.
On January 5, 1943, she was united in marriage to Louis Schmitt at Saint Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. They farmed in the Roseville area until his death on December 14, 1961 at which time she continued the farming operation with the help of her family.
Edith then married Raymond Heit on March 9, 1974 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Roseville. Raymond died on June 29, 1999. Edith had been a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church and the Rosary Society at Roseville and later transferred to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was also a member of the Saint Catherine’s Circle.
Edith was also a member of the Senior Citizens and Heritage Club. Her interests included gardening, taking care of her indoor plants and crocheting afghans for her family. She also was a volunteer at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home for several years. Edith took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always looked forward to sharing her life with them.
Living family members include five children, Robert (Patricia) Schmitt of Rockford, Kenneth (Fran) Schmitt of Charles City, Gerald ( Linda) Schmitt of Rockford, Kathleen (Tom) Curl of Ionia, and Timothy (Teresa) Schmitt of Greene; four step children, Melvin (Jeanette) Heit, Norman (Mary Ann) Heit and Gerald (Jeannie) Heit all of New Hampton, and Maxine (Chuck) Shekleton of Farmersburg; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; four brothers, Adrian (Helen) Freidhof of New Hampton, Fay (Berenice) of Lourdes, Cyrus (Jeanne) Freidhof of Alta Vista and Robert (Lorraine) Freidhof of Ridgeway; and a sister, Gertrude Lentz of Elma.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a step grandson; a brother, Jerome Freidhof; and two siblings in infancy.
