Charles City, IowaJohn A. Swaroff, 91, of 200 3rd Avenue, Charles City died on February 12, 2005, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for John Swaroff will be held 10:30 a.m.Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service held at 6 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.
John Alex Swaroff was born November 16, 1913 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Alex and Katheryn (Mischrakoff) Swaroff. He was raised in Mason City and graduated with the Class of 1933.
He was united in marriage to Hildred "Hilly" Elbert on August 10, 1940, in Mason City. He worked for Sieg Auto Parts for 20 years and as owner/operator of Swaroff’s Service Inc. from 1961 to 1987 when he retired. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus where he served as Past Grand Knight, 50-year member of Jaycees, where he served as president, the Elks, Heritage Club, and Senior Citizens of Charles City. He also served as a Volunteer Fireman for 31 years.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting and playing 500. He was also an avid watcher of sports of all kinds and was known for his fondness for collecting, cracking, and selling black walnuts.
Living family members include three daughters, Katie (Jan) Krajewski, Arvada, Colorado, Dorothy (Dennis) Bartz, Charles City, and Mary (Allen) Williams, Charles City; two sons, John “Jay” Swaroff, Charles City, and Phil Swaroff, Lincoln, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren, Karen and Dan Dwyer, Denver, Colorado, Mark and Stefan Krajewski, Littleton, Colorado, Dee Johnson, Charles City, Brad and Brenda Bartz, Vinton, Travis and Lisa Bartz, Charles City, Alicia and Tyler Evans, Urbandale, John Martin Swaroff, Lincoln, Nebraska, Chris and Sarah Williams, Kodiak, Alaska, Angie Williams, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mike Williams, Charles City; and 6 great grandchildren, Alison and Lucas Johnson, Charles City, Tyler, Justin, and Abby Bartz, Vinton, and Blake Williams, Kodiak, Alaska; sisters-in-law Lenore “Totsy” Schlader and husband Jerome, Rockford, and Wilma Elbert, Faribault, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hilly on February 13, 2002; two sisters; and one brother.
