Dorothy Ward, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, August 20, 2006, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Dorothy May Thompson was born March 9, 1920, at Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, the daughter of John and Ina (White) Thompson. She graduated from East High School and Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing both at Des Moines. Dorothy served in the Army Nurse Corp from 1942 to 1945. During that time she served with the 125th General Hospital in the Philippines. Dorothy worked at the California Lutheran Hospital in Los Angeles, California from 1945 to 1946.

On March 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Ward at Ames. Over the years she worked in the medical field at Ames, Frederick, Maryland and Ft. Dodge. In the middle 1980’s she moved to Charles City. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Heritage Club and was a 50 year member of the Wa Tan ye Club where she served in various offices. Her hobbies included doing needlework and crossword puzzles, reading and traveling. Dorothy will always be remembered as a person that thoroughly enjoyed life.

Living family members include a sister, Virginia Thompson of Charles City; four brothers, John Thompson of St. Paul, Minn., Robert (Darlene) Thompson of Jesup, Gordon (Janice) Thompson of Mason City, and Douglas Thompson of Berea, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Donald and Russell Thompson; and a sister, Winnifred Zierath.
