Charles City, IowaBernadine “Bernie” Yeager, age 83, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Bernie was born on January 13, 1925, the youngest daughter of Chester and Christine Thompson of Van Horne, Iowa. She graduated from Van Horne High School and attended the University of Iowa College of Nursing, earning her degree in 1947.
Bernie met her future husband Dr. Robert B. “Bob” Yeager while they were both students at the University. They married in 1947 and moved to Charles City in 1949 after Bob graduated from dental school. Bernie and Bob had two sons: Tim, born in 1950, and Dan born in 1953.
Bernie was active in PEO, and in the AAUW. She and Bob sang in the choir at the First United Methodist Church (later Trinity Church) for more than forty years. She was a prodigious knitter, and used a 19th century German technique taught to her by her grandmother. Bernie’s sweaters and Christmas stockings have been distributed to friends and family all over the world.
Bernie was an excellent driver, and won many trophies driving in sports car rallies in the 1950’s and 60’s. She supported Bob’s missionary work in Mexico and Guatemala for over twenty years, and made frequent trips to remote areas providing nursing services. Bernie and Bob loved to stay at their cabin northwest Ontario. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007 with a reception at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Bernie was a much loved wife, mother and grandmother. She always put the needs of others before her own, and gave generously of her time and talent. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister Jeanette Thorman. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert B. Yeager of Charles City, her sons Robert “Tim” Yeager (Caroline Moores) of Oak Park, Illinois, and Daniel C. Yeager (Jeanine) of Iowa City, and her granddaughters Hanna Gugliuzza (Joseph), Hillary Yeager, and Ayshe Yeager, and by her sister Maxine Patterson of Rock Island, Illinois.
Memorials may made in the form of flowers, or donations to Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee Street, Charles City, IA 50616, earmarked for the “Mission Fund”.
