Russel J. Vernon, age 91, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Russel J. Vernon was born on December 28, 1914, near Carthage, South Dakota, the son of Frank B. and Hannah (Siglin) Vernon. He graduated from Woodward High School, Woodward, Iowa, in 1931.

On March 25, 1940, he was united in marriage to Irene Harker. They farmed most of their lives in the Floyd area. Russel was a member of the Floyd United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, and served as a Floyd Township trustee for many years. He enjoyed spending time outdoors. His family was always very important to him and he took every opportunity to share his life with them.

Living family members include his wife, Irene Vernon of Charles City; three children, Shirley Curry of Mesa, Arizona, David F. Vernon of Moreno Valley, California, and Jean Bouska of South Saint Paul, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ross K. Vernon; a sister, Marville Hawn of Perry; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lawrence Vernon; and a brother-in-law, C.L. Hawn.
