Martin W. Schmitt, 69, of Charles City, died Friday, August 11, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Martin William Schmitt was born October 25, 1936, at Passaic, N.J., the son of William and Ruth (Gutzwiller) Schmitt. He graduated from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J. and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.

On September 10, 1966 he was united in marriage to Therese Wolpensinger at St. Kevin’s Church in Flushing, N.Y. Martin was a microbiologist employed with various pharmaceutical laboratories including Fromm and Solvay. For the last five years he was seasonally employed by Sherman Nursery. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and served on the I.C. School Board and the Parish Council.

He was a BeFriender, a member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in Renew and Marriage Encounter. Martin served on the Charles City Library Board and was active in the Democratic Party. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, cross country skiing and gardening. His other interests included spending time with his family, traveling, reading, listening to classical music and staying abreast of current events.

Living family members include his wife, Therese (Terry) Schmitt of Charles City; six children, Joe Schmitt of Chicago, Ill., Tom (Jennifer) Schmitt of Crystal, Minn., Peter (Ardis) Schmitt of Famington Hills, Mich., Susan (John) Reyna of Kansas City, Mo., Catherine (Paul) Brookes of London, England and Laura Schmitt of Iowa City; three step grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, Lauren; his mother, Ruth Schmitt of Whiting, N. J.; two sisters, Dorothea Schmitt of Washington, Maine, and Elizabeth Griffin of Bowie, Md.; a brother-in-law, Peter (Barbara) Wolpensinger of Deer Park, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
