CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Edward Gerner, 96, of Charles City, died Sunday, (April 10, 2005) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Edward Gerner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley Hayek of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday.

Edward Gerner, age 96, of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Edward Lawrence Gerner was born February 27, 1909, at Osterdock, the son of Frank and Theresia (Satran) Gerner. He received his education from Saint Mary’s Catholic School, Roseville. Edward proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II in Panama and Nicaragua.

In 1946 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Cook. During his working career he worked as a baker specializing in cakes and pastries. Upon his retirement he moved to Charles City. Edward was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included baking, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Living family members include foster daughters Shirley (Marvin) Hesse, Charles City, Lilly (Bill) Harris, Keokuk, Barbara Tompkins, Keokuk; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; sister Edna McCoy, Charles City; three nieces, Madonna (Lester) Trask, Rita Mehmen, Joyce (Gordon) Jung, and one nephew, Gary (Sharol) McCoy, all of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant brother; and one sister Florence Tykal.
