Clarence “Clair” L. Vance, 83, of Charles City, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City, Iowa.

Jane Tjaden Lay Missioner will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery rural Floyd

Clair L. Vance was born October 17, 1924, in Floyd County, the son of Clifford and Ethel (Hennick) Vance. He graduated from the Floyd High School, where he was the pitcher on the high school baseball team. Clair served in the United States Army during World War II.

On January 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Jean Stock at the Central Methodist Church in Charles City. He retired from Oliver / White Farm after 28 years and continued doing what he enjoyed, farming and carpentry. In 1988 he was Charles City Wrestling sports fan of the year. Clair was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd, attended card club for many years and enjoyed playing euchre with his buddies in Colwell. His interests included all athletics, fishing, golfing, the Iowa Hawkeye’s, the Yankees and, being an avid fan of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include his loving wife of 61 years, Jean Vance of Charles City; four sons, Dennis (Diane) Vance of Charles City, Duane Vance of Floyd, Ron Vance, of Charles City and Gary (Wendy) Vance of Charles City; 10 grandchildren, Teresa (James) Severin, Matthew (Julie) Vance, Chad (Lisa) Vance, Michelle (Cory) Anderegg, Nathan (Becky) Vance, Scott (Stacey) Vance, Nicholas Vance, Shaun (Kim) Vance, Domonic Vance, Melissa Vance; 13 ˝ great grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Stiles of Mason City and Barbara (Jerry) Sudol of Nashua; two brothers, Dale (Maxine) Vance of Floyd and Alvin (Dorothy) Vance of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clifford Vance, Jr. and Wayne Vance.
