Duane Garman, 73, of Charles City, Iowa, died Friday, November 24, 2006, at his home.

Duane Sylvester Garman was born July 19, 1933, in Stilson, Iowa the son of Sylvester and Ann (Bleich) Garman. He graduated from the Britt High School 1952, Iowa State Teachers College 1956 and received his Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. While at Iowa State Teachers College he was the starting third baseman. Duane proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Jeannine Loftus at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge.

Garman began his teaching career as head football and basketball coach at Garner. In 1964 he came to Charles City where he was the head basketball coach, sophomore football coach and taught drivers education. In 1982 he moved to the middle school where he taught physical education and coached until his retirement in 1994. Duane was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, served as president of the Parish Council and on the Archdiocesan Board of Education. He was a lector, communion minister, and completed the Lay Ministry Formation program of the archdiocese.

He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was involved with teaching RCIA classes, RENEW and “Meal In The Upper Room”. Duane was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and Elks Lodge. His interests included participating in town team sports, woodworking, golfing, handball, playing cards and gardening. Duane took special interest in his family and always looked forward to the time he could spend with them.

Living family members include his wife, Jeannine Garman of Charles City; three children, Crystal (Tracy) Crocker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Scott (Connie) Garman of Alpharetta, Ga., and Cheryl (Tony) Trainer of Algona; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Merle (Teresa) Garman of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
