Lorraine Hammond was born August 1, 1912, in Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar D. and Pearl (Tracy) Hammond. She was raised in the area and attended rural schools in Floyd and Chickasaw Counties, graduating from Nashua High School.

She was united in marriage to Howard Powers November 12, 1955, and the couple made their home in Nashua where Lorraine owned and operated a Donut Shop and Cafe until 1958. A short time later, they moved to Charles City.

She worked in both the Nashua and Charles City School Food Service programs and was director of the Charles City Food Service from 1968-1978. She also served as cook for the Girl Scout Camp from 1968-1978. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and women’s group and the Heritage Club and Floyd County Volunteers. She was also a member of the American and Iowa School Food Service Associations where she served on the Executive Board for 6 years.

Lorraine enjoyed various arts and crafts and sewing, as well as baking, especially breads and cakes, often in large amounts.

Lorraine is survived by four sons, Stanley (Jackie) Thomason, Rolling Meadows, IL; Larry (Lois) Thomason, Fairfield Bay, AR; Ronald (Cherryl) Thomason, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Spencer (Connie) Thomason, New Berlin WI; one daughter, Marilyn (Henry) Hemmen, Rock Island, IL; 13 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Elna (Bernard) Ponto, Kansas City, MO, and Marjorie (Pat) Hagarty, Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Max, Glenn, and Clair Hammond; and one grandson.

Being with friends and family was very important to Lorraine. Her primary joy in life came from her family. She will be remembered as a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose kitchen and heart were always open. She was admired and adored and will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to all the staff at the Mauget Home for their loving care of our mother.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mauget Home, 5117 7th Ave., Moline, IL 61265, or to the Campership Fund in honor of Lorraine Powers, Camp Courageous of Iowa, PO Box 418, Monticello, Iowa.
