Leona Nelson, 84, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Leona Tomena (Vaala) Nelson was born June 10, 1921, at the family farm in rural Saude, the fifth child of John and Anna (Otteson) Vaala.

She was baptized on July 3, 1921 and affirmed her faith on May 12, 1935 at the Suade Lutheran Church. On January 1, 1943, she was united in marriage to Stanley E. Nelson at the Saude Lutheran Church parsonage. They farmed in Howard County after their marriage and later moved to Charles City where she worked at Morey's Grocery, Peterson Cleaners and the Charles City Locker.

She found it very relaxing to tend to their large garden and raspberry bushes. It gave her great joy to share the bounties of their garden. Leona enjoyed canning as much as possible. Bread and Butter Pickles, tomatoes and tomato juice were a priority as she shared them with many family members. Her kitchen was a special place for her, baking pies and trying new recipes. Christmas time meant the traditional lefse and peanut balls.

It was so obvious to everyone who knew her, her family was very important to her. Leona's other interests included dancing, fishing, reading, listening to waltzes, and spending time with friends.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Linus Schrage; a daughter-in-law, Suzi Zirbel and her husband, Jim; seven grandchildren, Kim (Dean) Marzen, Kelly (Paul) Baron, Kathy (Glenn) Sansburn, Konnie (Rick) Stewart, Jason Nelson, Lisa (Khan) Kammerer, and Joshua Nelson; nine great grandchildren, Jesse Marzen and his fiance Kari Kielman, Anna and Isaac Baron, Ryan and Jason Sansburn, Kaylyn and Brooke Stewart, Lauren and Jack Kammerer; a great great grandson, Tyler Allen; a sister-in-law, Gladys Iverson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on June 6, 1990; a son, Jack Nelson on December 28, 1992; three sisters, Cora Knutson, Viola Robinson and Amy Munson; and a brother, Joseph "Bud" Vaala.

Memorials may be directed to Cross Lutheran Church, 312 1st Avenue, Charles City, Iowa or Hospice of North Iowa Charles City site, 1003 Gilbert St., Charles City, Iowa.
