Bernard L. Meyer, 78, of Charles City, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Pastor June Keel will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Bernard Loren Meyer was born May 5, 1930, at Fairmont, Minn., the son of Roy and Ruth (Flora) Meyer. He graduated from the Rudd High School in 1949. As a senior he played 1st base on the 1949 State Championship Baseball Team. On January 16, 1951, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Brandau at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

He served in the United States Marines and in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Bernard was employed for 38 years by the Milwaukee Railroad as a Telegrapher, which later became the Soo Line. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion, Honor Guard, and Charles City Singers. Bernard enjoyed volunteering on the Ruthven Fire Department for 14 years. His interests included square dancing, golf, working with stain glass, crossword puzzles, and the church choir.

Living family members include his wife, Jeanne Meyer of Charles City; five children, Cathy (Tom) Dole of Brandon, Miss., Mike (Jackie) Meyer of Ruthven, Monty (Beverly) Meyer of Bettendorf, Rhonda (Kevin) Griffin of Laurens, and Jim (Brenda) Meyer of Omaha, Nebr.; 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; step-mother, Florence Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.;two half sisters, Janice (Don) Larsen of Warner Springs, Calif. and Nancy (Bill) Roslansky of Fairmont, Minn.; and a half brother, Steven (Becky) Meyer of Fairmont, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son, Loren Meyer in 1953.
