Verda Cowan, 89, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Verda Irene Hennick Cowan was born September 29, 1915, at Floyd, the daughter of Ora and Harriet (Huffman) Hennick. She attended school at Floyd. On July 6, 1932 she was united in marriage to Melvin Tibbitts at Charles City. Melvin died on January 11, 1969. Verda married Samuel Cowan in November of 1973 at the Little Brown Church. Samuel died on January 18, 1994. Before her retirement she was employed at the Spic n Span Bakery, Meusel Hardware and Fareway. Verdas interests included traveling, dancing, gambling and attending Charles City Comet sporting events and the local mens softball games.

Living family members include two children, Roger (Dee) Tibbitts of Charles City and Linda (Tom) Maulsby of Clear Lake; 17 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and three step children, Jerry (Liz) Cowan and Jan Cowan both of Kentucky and John Cowan of Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four children, Merle Tibbitts, Bonnie Randall, Patricia Sickman and Merlyn Tibbitts; two grandchildren, Dennis Tibbitts and Diane Christie; a brother, Willard Hennick; and three sisters, Ethel Vance, Bessie Stewart and Leda Weiler.

CHARLES CITY — Verda Cowan, 89, of Charles City, died Tuesday (March 8, 2005) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Verda Cowan will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hauser Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
