William “Bill” Gies, 95, of Riceville, died Saturday, February 3, 2007, at the Riceville Community Rest Home, in Riceville. Burial will be at a later date in the Saratoga Cemetery.

William Gies was born October 4, 1911, the son of Jacob and Catherine (Dietz) Gies, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended school at Lincoln, Nebr. In 1939 he moved to Crystal Lake where he farmed for two years. He then purchased a farm in 1941 in Saratoga Township near Live Springs and farmed until 1974.

On September 17, 1968, he was united in marriage to Audrey Staley. They moved to Charles City in 1974 and in 2000 move to Riceville. He was a member of the Saratoga Presbyterian Church, Farm Bureau, Royal Neighbors of America and the Wigwam N Wagon Camping group.

He enjoyed visiting, horseshoe pitching, square dancing and attending music jams and gospel sings. Bill will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He and Audrey also spent 30 years wintering in Texas.

Living family members include his wife of 38 years, Audrey Gies of Riceville; a step daughter Carol Hereid of Horicon, Wis.; two step grandchildren, Kristin Hereid and Gregg (Jenny) Hereid; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step son-in-law, Larry Hereid; three sisters and a brother who are buried in Russia; a brother Conrad who died at sea when his parents were enroute to the United States; two brothers, Fredrich and Jacob Gies; and a sister, Amalia Nolda.
