Marie Haase, 95, of Charles City, died Thursday, August 24, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Marie Thoreson Elliott Haase was born May 27, 1911, near Ruthven, the daughter of Ole and Torena (Saalsa) Thoreson. She graduated from Graettinger High School and from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, with a teaching degree.

On June 30, 1943, she was united in marriage to Russell Elliott. Russell died on March 3, 1980.

Marie married John Haase in 1986. John died in January of 1998. During her early teaching career Marie taught in Lost Island Township, Milford and Vinton communities. In 1950 she opened a preschool program in the Manual Arts Building next to Central Elementary school which she was teacher and director until 1960. In 1961 she joined the Charles City Public School System serving as a second grade school teacher at Central Elementary school and later Washington Elementary. After retiring from Charles City Public Schools in 1975, Marie launched the Jack and Jill preschool program for the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. She continued there as director until 1989. She then did volunteer work at Lincoln Elementary School.

Marie was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she served as past president of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Other memberships in which she served in leadership capacities include, Pythian Sisters, American Legion Auxiliary, Floyd County American Legion Auxiliary, Charles City Community Education Association, Charles City Women’s Club, United Way, City Improvement Association, and Alpha Delta Kappa Education Sorority.

She also volunteered at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Treasure Chest, and Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1960 Marie was awarded Woman of the Year by the Charles City Chamber of Commerce. Her interests included church activities, playing bridge and golf, reading, ceramics, needlework, and bicycling. Marie’s goal was always to keep active in all facets of society.

Living family members include a son, Thomas and his wife, Virginia Elliott of Fargo, N.D.; a daughter, Sheryl Elliott and her husband, Ken Robinson of Washington D.C.; four grandchildren; David, Nathan and Mark Elliott, and Hilary Chandler; seven great grandchildren, Shaina, Jordan, Kelsie, McKenzie and Savannah Elliott, and Desmond and Quincy Chandler; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a grandson, Michael Elliott; a great granddaughter, Karlie Elliott; three sisters, Thelma Knudson, Thyra Peterson and Alys Carter; and two brothers, Norman and Haaken Thoreson.
