David was born on July 14, 1929 at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, the first child of Fred H. and Bessie L. (Olson) Markle. He attended New Hampton Schools, graduating in 1947.

In 1950 he married Betty Lou Knutson at the Jerico Lutheran Church. Two children were born of this union. Betty passed away in 1993. In 1998, he married former New Hampton High School classmate, Dolores Zipse Boerschel at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Dave was baptized both Methodist and Baptist. He was confirmed by adult confirmation at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greene. He was a former congregational president at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and was a current member and former congregational president at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He was active on many church boards. Since 1998, he also had attended the First Baptist Church in Charles City.

During High School, Dave worked for his father at Markle Implement (International) in New Hampton and worked on tractors for local farmers. After graduation, he worked for Henning Implement and Raush Trucking. Dave served his country in the Korean Conflict. In 1955 he opened his own Service Station, “Dave’s DX” in New Hampton. In 1957 he joined Dale Ott and the Ford Tractor Company in Charles City and Greene, where he had moved to in 1962. That business was destroyed by the tornado in 1968, with Dave sustaining two fractured ankles in the tornado.

In 1968 he joined Clint Richards in opening a John Deere Dealership in Charles City. He moved from Greene to Charles City in 1978, and he and Betty “retired” in 1983, giving him over 30 years in the implement business.

Retirement heralded a new frenzy of work and volunteerism. He won the Republican bid for Floyd County Supervisor in 1986 and served in that capacity for 4 years. He was very proud to serve on the Floyd County Memorial Hospital’s Board of Commissioners for many years. In 1991 he began assisting with funeral home duties at Hage Funeral Home in Charles City, and continued when it became a part of the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes. He also assisted with Fontanelle Hybrid in equipment design, planting, and harvesting.
In 1994, Dave was honored to receive the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” Award.

Dave was a member or former member of many area organizations: Charles City Chamber of Commerce, Noon Kiwanis, Moose Lodge, Parkinson Support Group, District Representative-Elderbridge, Floyd County Historical Society, Foster Grandparent Board Chairman, Chair of Floyd County Memorial Hospital Commissioners, Interim Administrator for Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Hospice Advisory Board Chairman, City of Charles City Road Task Force, FFA, NAICC Ag. He was a former Councilman for the Greene City Council.

In his free time, Dave enjoyed spending time with friends fishing in Canada and hunting in Wyoming, playing cards, reading, or traveling. His declining health required him to move to the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in November, 2007.
