Harriett Elfers, 90, of Charles City, formerly of Floyd, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Harriett Wavel Stewart Burzette Elfers was born September 16, 1915, in Floyd County, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Hazel (Raymond) Stewart. She graduated from the Floyd High School in 1933.

On December 18, 1935, she was united in marriage to Ivan R. Burzette. Ivan died on November 9, 1968. Harriett then married Wayne Elfers on July 22, 1972. Wayne died on July 18, 1988.

She was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Floyd Alumni Association, Oakwood Cemetery Association and the Floyd Scholarship Fund. Harriett was a volunteer at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. She worked at the Floyd Post Office, the Charles City Community School and as a Foster Grandparent.

Harriett is survived by four daughters, Betty (Roger) LaCoste and Cheryl Holtz both of Leawood, Kans., Bea (David) Troyanek and Cathy Burzette both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two step daughters, Linda (David) Ervin of Bella Vista, Ark. and Diane (Stan) Bonta of Urbandale; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; countless loving nieces and nephews, extended family and friends and special companion, Howard Barrett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Hazel Stewart; husband Ivan R. Burzette and son, Francis Burzette; husband, Wayne Elfers; a sister, Joyce Wilcox; three brothers, Raymond, George and Eugene Stewart; and two grandchildren, Daniel Stalker and Jeannie Rud.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family, the Grace United Methodist Church, 701 1st Avenue, Floyd, IA 50435, or Floyd Scholarship Fund.
