Well Known Traveling Man Dead

The grocery men and many others of this city were shocked to learn of the death of Frank Rabe of Charles City last Saturday night. Mr. Rabe has been selling Osage grocery men goods about twenty years and enjoyed the largest business of any salesman coming here.

While in this city last Thursday he was troubled with a severe headache and had it treated and soon felt better. The next evening his family was called by phone from Nora Springs, he being in a semi-unconscious condition.

Members of his family and his physician went there from Charles City and his ear drum was lanced, and he was taken home the next morning.

While no hope was entertained for his recovery, an operation was performed Saturday night.

His death occurred at the Cedar Valley Hospital, the cause being spinal meningitis resulting from a mastoid opening into the brain cavity.

FRANK RABE, POPULAR
SALESMAN, IS DEAD

WAS ILL ONLY SHORT TIME - HAD
BEEN COMING TO OSAGE
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS

The following account from the Charles City Twice-a-week, tells of the sudden death of Frank Rabe, a traveling salesman who had been calling on Osage grocery men for the past twenty-five years. He was unusually well liked and was considered a valuable man by his company.

"This community was saddened and shocked to learn of the death of Frank Rabe, which occurred Sunday evening at 9:00 o'clock, at the Cedar Valley Hospital. Mr. Rabe came home Thursday evening suffering with a severe earache, but resumed his duties as a salesman the next day. He arrived in Nora Springs Friday evening and went to his room, being at that time too ill to speak. Mrs. Rabe and son, Carl accompanied by a local physician, went at once to Nora Springs. The next morning Mr. Rabe was brought to the Cedar Valley Hospital where an operation was performed in hopes of saving his life, but to no avail.

"Death resulted from a mastoid with meningitis complications. Mr. Rabe had resided in this city for twenty-five years and had been salesman for the Smith, Lichty and Hillman Company at Waterloo for the past twenty years.

"The family was well known in the city and has been friends who will hasten to bid sincere sympathy in their bereavement.

"Funeral services will be at the Congregational Church Wednesday [Dec 17] afternoon at 2 o'clock. Reverend Swann officiating. The Masonic order, of which he was a faithful and active member, will have charge of the services. Interment will be at Riverside."
