RUDD, IOWA - Douglas V. Halsted, 60, of 611 Taylor St., died Friday (June 28, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, following a car accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School in Rockford. Officiating will be Monsignor Walter Brunkan, of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the gymnasium of the school. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. Fullerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider memorials to the Douglas V. Halsted Memorial Fund for the establishment of scholarships.

Doug was born on June 2, 1942, in Oelwein, one of two children of Walter and June (Miehe) Halsted. He graduated from Oelwein Community High School and received his bachelor's degree in education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, and his master's degree in guidance counseling from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. In 1964, he began his teaching career as a social studies instructor for the Cumberland-Massena School System.

On June 19, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Duffy at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. They later moved to Rudd, where he taught social studies in the Rudd- Rockford-Marble Rock School System (R-R-MR). Several years ago, Doug became the high school guidance counselor at R-R-MR.

Doug was also heavily involved in the junior high and high school athletic programs at R-R-MR. He was instrumental in establishing the girls' high school softball and volleyball programs. His overall record in softball alone was 617 wins and 357 losses. At the time of his death, Doug was serving as athletic director and head coach of girls' varsity softball and track, and junior high volleyball. Together with his wife, Mary, Doug owned Hoover's Hatchery in Rudd. He spent countless hours building the business with his wife while also teaching and coaching.

Doug was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, and also enjoyed watching and attending Minnesota Twins games. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville.

Those who have been blessed and who are thankful in sharing Doug's life include, Mary, his wife of 37 years; their four daughters, Lisa, and her husband, Jerry Paulus, of Rudd, Gina and her husband, Mike Taylor, of Mason City, Nicole Halsted and her fiancé, Matthew Nash, of Arlington, Va., and Sara and her husband, Mike Manning, of Hutchinson, Minn.; their son, Tony, and his wife, Lori Halsted, of Mason City; one sister, Priscilla Thornton, of Oelwein; and his favorite seven grandchildren, Jordan and Evan Paulus; Katelyn, Alex and Paige Halsted; and Ireland and Teague Manning.

He was preceeded in death by his parents.

Doug's devotion to his family and dedication to his profession and successful business were his greatest joys. He touched many lives and will be sadly missed by family, friends, students, fellow teachers, administrators and coaches.
