In Response To: Brown husband of Susan Davis/Brown/Brace between 1850-1860 (Tim Anderson)

In my family history, based on notes from Anson Anderson, Anson Fisk married Caroline Brown, with no further explanation of her family. Yet all documents that I find show her as a Brace daughter. I have seen a few questions posted online which presume a Mr. Brown as Susan Davis's first husband, but no concrete evidence of this. I am not yet certain if the Brown name is real or mistaken, as I am not yet certain if the name comes from any source other than the notes recorded by Anson Anderson.

There is an 1856 census record for Yanke, Chickasaw, IA (page 3) that shows Myron and Susan Brace with 2 year old son Orrin Brace. Caroline would be born about 5 months later that same year. This leaves a very small window (about 4 months) for Susan to conceive with Mr. Brown, have Mr.Brown die/divorce, and then Susan remarried. I suppose it is possible that Myron had another wife named Susan before Susan Davis.

The one anomaly on this 1856 census is that the age for Susan Davis looks like 29 which is 10 years too old-- however the 2 in 29 is written differently from the other 2's on the page and could have been an attempt to correct it to 19? All other ages track exactly with later census records of the family. In the 1850 census in Fayette, IA it shows Susan Davis as a 12 year old daughter of Sylvester Davis, who I have recorded as her father.

Brown seems to be a common name in the Fayette/Chikasaw county area in Iowa where Susan Davis grew up and where she first lived as wife of Myron C Brace. I have checked other Census records in these counties to find candidates for a Mr. Brown husband.
