The subject of this obituary was born in Huron County, Ohio, December 10, 1822, and died at his home in Pleasant Valley Township, Thursday, July 23, 1903, and was at the time of his death 80 years, seven months and eight days old.

Mr. McMillan was an early settler of this neighborhood having immigrated to this country and settled in Illyria Township in the year 1851, where he resided until 1873 when he removed to Pleasant Valley Township, during most of this time his occupation was that of farming. The life he led was an exemplary one, and well benefiting a man of his sterling worth. He was courteous, obliging and honest and his value as a friend and neighbor was far-reaching and not confined alone to the community in which he lived.

The home life of Mr. McMillan was most pleasant and he enjoyed the companionship of his wife and children to the fullest extent, and it was with the deepest of regret that the form beloved by all was lowered into the silent tomb.

Fitting funeral services were held from the German Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Rice, of West Union, assisted by Rev. Stoeckmann, of Elgin, officiating, and a most fitting tribute was paid to the memory of the departed. A large concourse of sorrowing friends followed all that was mortal of John McMillan to its last resting place in the Elgin Cemetery.

Deceased leaves a wife and six children, five daughters and one son, besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
