John Anton Gantenbein was born Jan. 21, 1899,
near Peosta, in Dubuque County to John and Ursula
(Haas) Gantenbein. He was baptized in the
Centralia Presbyterian Church Feb. 121, 1899. At
age two, he moved with his parents to a farm
northeast of Maynard. Following the death of his
father in 1808, the family lived in Maynard for
about six years, and then returned to the farm.In 1924, John married Alma May of Dyersville
with the Rev. Martin Russert officiating at the
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dubuque. Two children,
June (Mrs. Merlin Bruner) of Marble
Rock, and Jean (Mrs. Robert Henneger)of Maynard
were born. Mr. and Mrs. Gantenbein farmed until
1951 when they retired and moved to a home they
built in Maynard.He died Wednesday, Sept. 17, at his home.
John was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church
of Maynard.Besides his wife and children, he is survived
by a brother, Andrew,and a sister, Mrs. Lydia
Sprague, both of Maynard; five grandchildren,
Kelly, Jackie, and Lona Henneger, and Tim and
Tom Bruner.One sister, and a half-sister, preceded him
