Lydia U. Sprague, 95, Maynard, died Sat. Feb.
22, 1997 at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, after a
short illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 25,
11 AM at Maynard Presbyterian Church, Maynard,
Rev. Richard B. Emory, presiding. Burial was in
the Long Grave cemetery, Maynard. A memorial
service has been established at the Presbyterian
Church, Maynard.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, great
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband, Clair; three brothers, Andrew, John,
and in infancy, Anton Elmer Gantenbein; two
sisters, Bertha Schrader, and Kathren Paul.

Lydia Ursula Gantenbein was born March 17,
1900, at Centralia,the daughter of John and
Ursula (Haas) Gantenbein. At the age of one
year, she moved with her family from Dubuque
County to a farm four miles northeast of
Maynard. She attended the Maynard schools, and
Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in
the rural schools northeast of Maynard. She
married Clair Sprague May 5, 1921, at Oelwein.
Clair died April 11, 1967. They farmed in the
rural Randalia and Sumner area before moving to
California in 1941. They returned to Iowa in
1962 and purchased a home in Maynard. She was a
member of the Maynard Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the West Central Senior Citizens, and had been a resident of the Maple
Crest Manor since Feb. 23, 1996.

Jamison Schmitz Funeral Home handled the
arrangements.
