John "Jack" McNeil

A funeral mass for John F. "Jack" McNeil was held Saturday, March 24, 1990 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church at Clermont. The Rev. Paul Otting officiated with the Rev. Thomas Schwinn. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.

John Francis NcNeil, son of Edward and Eleanor (McDonald) McNeil, was born Oct. 21, 1926 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He died Wednesday, March 21, 1990 in St. John's Hospital at Springfield, MO where he had been hospitalized.

He attended the rural schools near his parents' farm and graduated from Postville High School in 1943.

On Nov. 11, 1947 he married Genevieve Nesbit at St. Francis de Sales Church at Ossian, Iowa. They had 9 children, The couple farmed in the Gunder and Castalia areas. For 17 years they had owned and operated the Valhalla Supper Club in Clermont.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Edward in 1985; a brother, Dan and a sister, Bea DuCharme.

Survivors include his wife, Gen, of Sparta, MO; 3 sons, Michael of Fredericksburg, IA; John of Monette, MO and Joe of Sacramento, CA; 5 daughters, Diane Stark of Richmond, VA; Colleen Laas of Ozark, MO; Carol Miller, Mary Schott, and Theresa Steffans, all of Clermont, IA. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Marjorie Hale of Cedar Rapids and Mary Finley of Elkader, IA and a brother, Joe McNeil of Postville and 28 grandchildren.

"Jack" was a member of St. Peter's Church in Clermont, the Knights of Columbus, the Clermont Community Club and the Iowa Restaurant Association. He had also served on the Clermont City Council.

Honorary Casket Bearers were: Richard Schlee, Donald Rose, Robert John Schupanitz, Lyle Olson, Alvin Erickson and Louie Erickson.

Casket bearers were: Thomas Hogan, Loren Meyer, Arthur Matt, Lloyd Schutte, Dennis Rear and Sylvan Taylor.
