Joseph McNeil

Joseph Edward McNeil, son of Edward and Christina (Steele) McNeil, was born December 28, 1914 on the family farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Postville, Iowa. He died Thursday, January 26, 1995 in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City, Iowa. He was 80 years old.

Joseph was confirmed in 1932 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. Joe attended the McKinley School near his home.

On June 24, 1941 he was united in marriage with Corinne Conboy in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Volga City, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Mary Jo, Kathleen, Virginia and Thomas. The couple lived on the family farm until they retired in 1973. Joe and Corrine moved to Postville where Joe spent his remaining years working as a carpenter. Joe was a long-time member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Clermont and St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Daniel McNeil, a half-brother, John McNeil, a sister, Margaret, who died in infancy, and a sister Bea Du Charme.

Surviving are his wife, Corrine; his children, Mary Jo Macken of North Liberty, Kathleen and husband Lewis Meyer of Spillville, Virginia and husband Edward Barnes of Cedar Rapids and Thomas McNeil and wife Susan of Mesa, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Erin Bryant, Fabian Macken, Carolyn Hemesath, Deborah Thorsten, Christine Woodson, Thomas, Brian and Jennifer Barnes, Mary, Katherine and Ryan McNeil and two great grandchildren, Taylor Macken and Blaine Woodson; two sisters, May (Mrs. Edward Finley) of Elkader, and Marjorie and husband Richard Hale of Cedar Rapids.

A Parish Scripture Service was held Friday, January 27, 1995 at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, January 28, 1995 in St. Bridget Catholic Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Leo Riley officiated. Special music was provided by the St. Bridget Choir, accompanied by Carol Katsumes. The Lector was Robert Zwirlein, and James Lechtenberg and Marvin Winter were the usher. The Mass Servers were Bruce Day and Nick Erickson. Casket bearers were Alvin Erickson, Thomas Hogan, Roger Wettleson, Ronald Meyer, Leon Dibble and Loren "Gus" Meyer. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Clermont, Iowa.
