Funeral Services for Dean Harkin (1977), who died Monday afternoon, June 20, at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, were held June 23 at St. Johns Lutheran church, Arlington, with burial at the Taylorsville cemetery. Rev. Loren Spaulding offficiated with the Brant-Kerns Funeral Home, Oelwein, in charge of arrangements.
Dean Frank "Smokey" Harkin was born at Arlington on Sept 21, 1924 to Lloyd and Sylvia Kerris Harkin. On June 25, 1969, he was married to Gerda Lehs at Beshler, Neb.
Dean was a life-long resident and farmer in the Arlington area. He was also a substitue mail carrier and bus driver for he Starmont school district. He served in military service during World War II and during the Korean confict, was a member of American Legion Post 219, and a past Legion commander of that post. He was also a member of St. John Lutheran church.
Surviving are his wife, Gerda; a step-son, Dennis Waskow, a step-daughter, Mrs Richard (Marlene) Bucholtz, Stevens Point, Wis; four grandchildren, two brothers, Charles Harkin, Moline, Ill., and Howard Harkin, Arlington, and a sister, Mrs Orlin (Evelyn) Knickerbocker, Arlington.
