Mrs. Mary G. Dixon Obituary

Mary Grace Dixon, nee Schmidekamp, daughter of Fred and Sophia Schmidekamp, stalwart German pioneers of northern Illinois, was born in Jo Davis County, Illinois, on August 28, 1861, and departed this life at Oelwein, Iowa on December 9th, 1937, aged 76 years, 3 months and 11 days.

She grew to womanhood in her native community and on May 15, 1888 was united in marriage to Mr. Frank Dixon. To this union, ten children were born, three of whom died in infancy and two sons preceded the mother in death in recent years.

After their marriage Mr. And Mrs. Dixon lived in and about Jo Davis County, Illinois until 1901, when they came to Oelwein where she has resided ever since.

Mr. Dixon died in 1921.

Mrs. Dixon is survived by three daughters and two sons: Mrs. Nellie Bathke of Oelwein, George Dixon of Des Moines, Earl Dixon of Oelwein, Mrs. Pearl Riddle of Dubuque and Mrs. Bess Welsh of Toledo, Ohio. She is also survived by one brother, Fred Schmidekamp of Lanark, Illinois and 39 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Charles Dixon, her son, preceded her in death in 1918, and her son Sam, was killed a year ago in an auto accident.

Mrs. Dixon was a devoted Christian. She was baptized in infancy and throughout the years maintained a beautiful simple faith. She found real help to meet life’s difficulties and in the darkest hours never doubted that God would help her. Amid all the hardships of life, and she had her share of them, she was always brave and buoyant. She was a devoted, self-sacrificing mother who single-handed supported and trained her family. She devoted her life to her home and children.

Funeral services were held at the Grace Methodist Church on Saturday, December 11th at 3:00 p. m. the pastor, Rev. F. C. Witzigman officiating. Mrs. Morris and Miss Kappes sang “Jesus Savior Pilot Me” and Garden of Prayer”. Mrs. Will Tait organist. Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.
