Clarence F. Boess, 95, formerly of West Union, passed away Feb. 17 at Good Samaritan Center, West Union. A memorial service was held Feb. 21 at the West Union Good Samaritan Center.
Clarence was born on February 23, 1904, in Bethel Township to Fred and Louise (Hoepfner) Boess. He graduated from Hawkeye High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving the US Army from July 21, 1942, to August 31, 1945. Clarence served part of this active duty time in England. He attended Upper Iowa College, Fayette, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Chicago Musical College, Chicago IL, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he received his M.A. degree in music. Clarence went on to receive his Masters of Music Education degree at VanderCook School of Music, Chicago.
Clarence was a member of the music faculty of Wartburg College, Waverly, where he directed the male chorus. He acted as band instructors for the school systems of Big Sandy and Great Falls, MT. He also taught instrumental music in Great Falls. He had returned to Iowa this past July.
Clarence devoted his life to music, whether teaching or repairing musical instruments. He had much pride in having his high school band perform for the Queen of England. He was an artist in instrument repair and some of the best musicians in Chicago used his services.
Clarence is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert Boess; a sister, Mildred Sorg; and a neice, Thelma Collins.
Survivors include nieces Arlene Broughton, Dubuque, Donna Robinson, Hawkeye, Jean Huffy, Waterville, and Susan Berschorner, Omaha, NE., nephews George Jr., Paul and Alan Boess of Hawkeye and Dennis Sorg, Coralville; and a brother, George Boess, Hawkeye.
Hanson's Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted the family.
