Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin, Iowa for Margaret M. "Peggy" Strong, age 80, of Elgin who died Friday, August 31, 2012 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Burial was in the Illyria Cemetery.

Margaret Marie Strong was born November 27, 1931 in rural Elgin to Marshall K. and Margaret L. (Erhardt) Helms. In 1936 her family moved to Brainard where her parents operated the Brainard Store until 1950. Peggy was baptized May 9, 1943 at the First Baptist Church in West Union, Iowa. She attended Brainard Pleasant Valley Country School and graduated from Elgin High School in 1949. Peggy worked at the Elgin State Bank from September 1949 until November 1963. On September 2, 1955 she married Charles Strong. They farmed from 1955 to 1963 until they moved to San Gabriel, California in January of 1964. Peggy worked for R. D. Helms Company until July 1990. Her husband, Charles, died on May 1, 1989. She made the decision to move back to Elgin in the fall of 1990.

Peggy enjoyed being involved in community affairs and was active in the Illyria Community Church, Illyria Cemetery Association, Volga Valley Ladies' Aid, Lima Cemetery Association, Progress Club, Progressive Home Study Club, Friends of the Elgin Library, Elgin Historical Society, Elgin Community Betterment Club, Palmer Memorial Foundation Board, and Montauk Questers #1253. She enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions. She liked to sew and quilt.

Peggy is survived by her brother Robert Helms; a sister-in-law Mary Strong; two brothers-in-law Kenneth (Bev) Strong and Arthur (Pat) Strong; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Charles, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law Myrten Strong; a sister-in-law Iantha Steffenhagen and her father-and mother-in-law, Harold and Zella Strong.
