Samuel Butikofer died at his home in Elgin, Wednesday noon, March 8, 1939, at the age of sixty-three years, one month and three days. He had been in poor health for the past four years due to heart and kidney trouble and these ailments gradually weakened him until the end came last Wednesday.Samuel Butikofer was born Feb. 5, 1876, in Clayton county, Iowa, on the farm now occupied by Lawrence Butikofer. He lived on the home place until he went into farming on his own farm in 1914 in Fayette county. He was united in marriage with Ida Frieden on Oct. 28, 1914. Six children were born to this union. One child died in infancy and the five, who with the widow survive to mourn the death of a beloved husband and father, are Lester, Hazel, Gladys, Marie and Erma. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Ben Schneider, one brother, Louis Butikofer, and numerous cousins and other relatives. His parents and two brothers, John and Joseph, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the home in Elgin at one o'clock and later at the Apostolic church east of town. Services were conducted by Joseph and Paul Banwart and burial was made in the Apostolic cemetery. Pall bearers were Lawrence and Louis Butikofer, Ben and Sam Schneider, Leonard and Herman Moor.
Relatives from distant points who came to attend the funeral were, Will Butikofer, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sutter, Hans Friederich, Karl Girst, Ben Wiggand, of LaGrange, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Banwart , Joseph Banwart and Louis Schneider, West Bend, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hinderman and son of Fairfax, Minnesota.
