TRAGIC DEATH OF HENRY KIRKMAN

Accident Occurred in the Oelwein C.C.W. Yards at About 2:30 Saturday Morning.
----
Henry Kirkman met sudden death Saturday morning at about 2:30 when he was crushed in a wreck in the Oelwein yards of the C.C.W. He had been employed as a switchman in the yards for the past two months and was working nights. At the time of the accident it is reported that he was on the platform of a caboose when it was struck by a string of cars with such force that the caboose was wrecked and he met sudden death.

The wreck caught fire and a fire alarm was turned in,but the fire was soon extinguished. The body was taken to the Henderson undertaking parlors where an inquest was held under the direction of Squire McQueen, with Messrs. John Bennett, R.B. Jamison and C.E. Swartz as jurymen. Witnesses were examined and the first session ended about 12:30 p.m. The afternoon session ended at 2:30 p.m.

Henry Kirkman came to Oelwein about twelve years ago from Chebanse, ILL., and was for a time in partnership with Thomas Edgar. Later he was engaged in other lines and up to two months ago he was in the employ of the J.B. Henderson Co. He was 34 years of age and was born near Union Hill, Illinois. Besides his wife he is survived by his mother, brothers and sisters who reside in Illinois. He was a young man highly esteemed by a large circle of friends and sympathy is extended the relatives in their sorrow.
