Hilda Jacobson

Hilda Jacobson, 88, of West Union, died Friday, May 7, 1999, from leukemia.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with the Rev. Fred Tessmer officiating.

Barbara Temple was the organist. Linda Johansen was the pianist and Larry Johansen was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Keith Hyman, David Johansen, Bart Johansen, Terry Johansen, Dale Johansen, Danny Jo Hansen, Lee Johansen and Kale Monroe.

Burial was at the West Union Cemetery. The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Hilda Olene (Hanson) Jacobson was born Sept. 3, 1910, at Eldorado, the daughter of Peter and Alta (Lee) Hanson. She was baptized Nov. 4, 1910, at St. John's Norwegian Lutheran Church in Eldorado, and confirmed there Nov. 2, 1924. She attended country school in Eldorado.

On April 11, 1931, Hilda was united in marriage to Arnold John Jacobson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn. To this union were born nine children.

They worked on a farm in Minnesota and moved to Iowa in 1938. Arnold and Hilda farmed in the OSSIAN and West Union area until they retired from farming in 1960, and moved to an acreage east of West Union.

Hilda worked at Palmer Memorial Hospital for a period of 10 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 43 years.

She enjoyed baking, playing cards, embroidery and crocheting, as well as spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold; children Betty and Lloyd Monroe of Castalia, Marjorie and James Monroe of West Union, Harold "Bud" and Edna Jacobson of Decorah, Gordon and Judy Jacobson of Clermont, Eugene and Pat Jacobson of Hawkeye, Laveme "Buster" Jacobson, Lois and Lyle Jo Hansen of West Union, and Judy and John Hyman of Postville.

There also are 35 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Charlotte Meyer, La Von Ishman and Inez Kleppe; and several nieces and nephews.

Hilda Jacobson was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert; one brother, Ralph Hanson; three sisters, Agnes Erickson, Vivian Larson and Lillian Suckow; two daughters-in-law, Mary Jacobson and Darlene Drews; and one great-grandson, Cory Rothmeyer.
