Elgin Echo, Thursday, 5 November 1896.

After an illness extending over several weeks Eddie Nicklaus died Monday evening, November 2, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Nicklaus. Funeral services were held Wednesday from the home and were conducted by Rev. Hack. Interment was made at the Elgin cemetery.

Eddie Nicklaus was 19 years and six months old at the time of his death. He was born in Elgin and was well known to Elgin citizens. His life is known to all and while it has been a sad existence, the shock of his death is no less severe and painful to the parents and family. Nature has strange and secret workings of her own and of all the impulses and attachments which she has given to humankind none are so strong, none are so heartfelt and so deeply sincere as the love of a parent for an unfortunate child. That which has absorbed the time and called forth the love and care of the parent, when taken away, leaves a sorrow in the heart in proportion to the attention and love it has commanded and received while it was a part of that heart.

Poor Eddie. The beginning of an and; the end of a beginning. Today you are as mighty as those who have gone before or will follow after.
