Alexander House was born in South Hill, Herkimer County, New York, August 12, 1824, and died near Hawkeye, Iowa, Sunday, May 15, 1910.
In 1851 he moved to Fayette County, Iowa, settling near West Union, where he made his home most of the time since that date. In 1852 he was united in marriage to Sarah Sturgis, who died in 1859. Four boys were born to this union, Oren, Abe, Frank and William. He was married for the second time in 1861, this time taking to wife Mrs. Augusta Pendleton, who departed this life March 14 of the present year. Six children were born to this union: Rose, Alexzine, Amos, Anna, James and Elmer. Seven of the children remain to mourn the loss of father; also three brothers, Jerry and Abe, of West Union, Iowa, and Josiah, of Plankinton, South Dakota. Also numbered among those who mourn are 13 grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.
Mr. House served in the war of the rebellion with the 38th Iowa Volunteers.
The funeral services were held from the home of his son, Elmer, four miles southwest of Hawkeye, Wednesday, May 18, and were conducted by Rev. William Galbreth, pastor of Hawkeye Methodist Episcopal church. A quartet composed of the following named persons supplying music: Harry Jacobs, M. E. Heiserman, Misses Ruby Johnston and Emma House.
The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Fayette.
