Elgin Echo, Thursday, 21 May 1896.
Thursday afternoon, May 7, at his son's home in West Union, occurred the death of Dr. J. H. Stafford. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9, Rev. Gammons officiating and were attended by many old settlers, all the friends and acquaintances of the deceased.
J. H. Stafford was born in Palmyra, New York, in August 1700, and would have been 97 years old his next birthday, he was married to Susan A. Smith in 1838, and they had three children, D. C. being the only survivor. Mrs. Stafford died in 1888. Mr. Stafford came to West Union in 1851 and at once engaged in the practice of his profession; also was a partner of his brother David Stafford in the "Stafford House" later known as the "West Union House." He was always a good, honest citizen and kind husband, father and neighbor.
Thus do our older men and women pass away and soon those who first settled Fayette County and bore the hardships and trials of pioneering will be no more and we, the younger and later generation, will only know of their names and acts by tradition and history and by the country they have left us. We also will grow old and die and be forgotten; after having filled our narrow place and bode our destined day. Such are the laws of nature and they never have, and nor will be broken.

Note: Dr. J. H. Stafford is shown in WPA records in West Union cemetery. Date of death is given as 7 May 1896, aged 86 years. The year of birth given in this article is an obvious newspaper error.
