Elgin Echo, Thursday, 23 January 1896.

On the 15th inst. Thomas Addie, the son of Andrew Addie ex-clerk and ex-representative of this county, suicided at his home in Scott Township. The deceased was always an active, industrious and conscientious boy and man and was held in high esteem by his parents and their neighbors. The particulars of the suicide are as follows: He had been reading at the table in the room where the family usually gather and left there remarking that he would go to his room and change is under clothing; shortly afterward the report of a revolver was heard and the falling as of some heavy body. Visiting the room at once it was found that the young man had shot himself and before medical assistance could be obtained he died. No motive for his act is known to his relatives. Several years ago he lost some money by the failure of a bank at Brush Creek and for a few days before his decease had seemed moody and despondent. It is a question whether or not after figuring up the chances of success or failure in life he may not have decided that it was better to flee from the troubles of this world and take the chances of the next. If so, who is prepared to say that he judged unwisely. Deceased was about 24 years old and with the average duration of life had about 40 years to live. Whether he should undergo the ills and buffeting of this life or end it by what we call suicide, was a question for him alone to determine. Having so determined no person living has the right to criticize his act. "Death; Our law and our religion call thee a punishment and a reward, Oh! Which have I deserved."
