Elgin Echo, Thursday, 23 January 1896.
Philip Dowse, Sr., died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. R. Carpenter at Emmetsburg, Iowa, January 16, 1896, aged 86 years, five months and six days. Interment was made at Elgin, Iowa, January 17.
Philip Dowse was born at Worton, County Wiltshire, England, August 10, 1809. He emigrated to America in 1851 and settled at Auburn, Fayette County, in 1854. At this point he operated the flouring mills until 1861 when he moved to Elgin, Iowa, and took control of the mills at that point. In 1884 Mr. Dowse' health and age forebid his continuing in active business, and he therefore turned the mill property over to his son, Philip Dowse, Jr., and moved with his daughter, Mrs. E. R. Carpenter, to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he lived until the time of his death.
Mr. Dowse was a man of much force of character and one who was successful from a business point of view. He was always prudent, farseeing and energetic. He had many friends and admirers wherever he lived and was a man who was always to be depended upon by those he liked, to whom he would prove faithful to the last. He was a good, kind neighbor and did much for the poor.
Truly, in the death of Philip Dowse the world has lost much, for the good he did here will be lasting. He lived longer than the time that is usually allotted to man and in doing has left after him a memory of a man who filled his position well in this world and will not soon be forgotten.
