Elgin Echo, Thursday, 23 January 1896.

On the morning of January 20, 1896, at his home In West Union, Iowa, after an illness of several weeks duration, Paul A. Nandell died. Funeral services were held in West Union, January 22, conducted by the Masons, of which order he was an honored member. The services were probably attended by more people, all the friends of the deceased, as any former like occasion in this country.

Paul A. Nandell was born in Berlin, Prussia, November 25, 1844, and was a son of Charles and Augusta (Zimdar) Nandell, who were also natives of Berlin. He attended school in his native city until 10 years of age and in 1854 immigrated with his parents and grandfather to America. The family spent a few months in St. Louis, Missouri, where the grandfather died. Shortly afterwards they continued their journey to Iowa and settled in Muscatine, but a short time subsequent removed to Comanche. In 18__ (looks like 63) they left the state, going to Kansas City, Missouri, but in 18__ (looks like 66) they returned to Iowa, locating in Anamosa, where Paul A. was engaged in farming. He was also married in that city October 6, 1866, his union being with Miss Ellen J. Kelley, daughter of Samuel Kelley, and a native of Viola, Jones County, Iowa. They are parents of three children, one son and two daughters: Jennie, Frankie and Ray.

Mr. Nandell continued to engage in agricultural pursuits until 1872, when he removed to Monticello, where he embarked in the hardware business, continuing operations at that place until 1880, when he came to West Union and formed a partnership with Joseph E. Nye in the hardware business. In politics he was a Republican, having supported the party since attaining his majority. While a minor, he enlisted in a Missouri Regiment but his mother protested against the boy going to the war and he was released.

Since Mr. Nandell's residence in West Union he has been the senior member of the hardware firm of Nandell & Nye, one of the leading mercantile establishments in that line in northeastern Iowa. His experience and knowledge of the world combined with the learning he possessed of theory and history and his wise application of it made him one of the best informed and evenly balanced men in Fayette County giving him a position among the foremost both in business and social circles.

At the time of Mr. Nandell's death he was a member of the West Union Lodge, No. 69, A. F. & A. M.; Clermont chapter, R. A. M.; And Langridge Commandery, No. 47, K. T. He was also a member of the West Union Lodge, No. 24, K. P. In all of these societies he was a respected member in good standing and had held many positions therein of honor and trust.

As a man Paul Nandell was the exception among many. He was self made and a success. He was honest and true to his innermost self, and was, therefore, upright with the world and all mankind. He was the noblest of God, since; "An honest man is the noblest work of God." He was always a man of but few words, and devoid of ostentation, but in true worth he was not lacking for where he gave his word and set his will, there would you and him be true and steadfast. As a friend he was all that man could be; ever ready and anxious to help and encourage; sacrifice; yea, in measure to a Pythias. In fact Mr. Nandell was a man whose death to those living is a great misfortune, but as it is, he will be remembered and emulated as an honest man and only in death is a man fully appreciated and only in appreciation lies renown.

Father and husband; as such no tongue can tell or pen can picture the emotions death, to those living, awakens; no word or act can comfort and no balm can heal the heart of those afflicted. What their grief is today they are sparing him had he lived till tomorrow.

He has lived. He has died. It is the lot of all. It is enough.
