Elgin Echo, Thursday, 9 January 1896.

John Stanton died at his home in Lutra Thursday, January 2, 1896. Funeral services were held at the Wesleyan Church Saturday, January 4 and interment was made in the Elgin Cemetery.

John Stanton was a good, honest man who had many friends. He was industrious to a fault, in that by hard work and exposure he contracted the disease which was the cause of his death. He was always a loving and indulgent husband and father and leaves a large family to mourn his death.

The family have the heartfelt sympathy of all.
