Elgin Echo, Thursday, 6 August 1903.
Clark Howard, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Enos Howard, of Illyria Township, died at the parental home July 30, 1903, after a couple of weeks illness. The immediate cause of death being inflammation of the bowels. Funeral services were held from the Illyria church, conducted by Rev. Rice, of West Union, who paid fitting tribute to the memory of this most worthy young man. The burial rites of the Elgin Homestead number 78, Brotherhood of American Yeomen, of which order deceased was a member, were also observed, and deep mourning is felt by all the members thereof as Mr. Howard was the first to be taken from their number since the organization of the order in this city five years ago. At the time of his death he was 18 years, four months and two days old. Clark was a young man well beloved
by all with whom he came in contact, his was a cheerful and buoyant spirit which made friends of those he met, and the large concourse of people who gathered to pay their last respects to the departed showed in what high esteem he was held by all. A father, mother, two brothers and one sister besides relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
