Elgin Echo, Thursday, 10 June 1903.

J. E. Hall, of Oelwein, a well known traveling man, was drowned in Village Creek near Lansing during the recent high water. Mr. Hall, who travels for the J. I. Case Co., was driving from LaFayette township to Lansing, in company with a young man named Dodds. When within five miles of Lansing they came to Village Creek which was much swollen by the recent rains and was a rushing torrent. It was about nine o'clock at night and they were unable to judge the rise of the water. The buggy was overturned and the occupants thrown out. Dodds clung to the lines and with the horses escaped after a hard struggle. Mr. Hall could not breast the torrent and lost his life.
