Sarah A. DeFrance was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, November 26, 1833. She was married to A. Jackson Patterson September 1, 1853 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1854, Sarah A. Patterson, with her husband moved to Fayette County, Iowa, and settled on a farm and continued to live in Fayette County the balance of her life. To this union nine children were born, four sons and five daughters, all of whom are living except one.
Mrs. Patterson died in Elgin, Iowa, November 30, 1908, aged 75 years and four days. She passed away after a brief period of extreme suffering. May peace and rest go with her.
The funeral services were held in the Illyria church, Thursday, December 3, conducted by Rev. J. S. Moore, who took his text from St. John 14 chapter, second verse. A large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends were present to pay a last sad tribute of respect to their loved neighbor and friend. The remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the cemetery there.
