After a valiant fight for life with stomach cancer, John H. Mattocks of Illyria, died at his home on Sept. 24, 1917 Mr. Mattocks was one of the prominent farmers of Illyria and had been successful. He and his wife had been planning to quit farming and remove to West Union where they could take a well earned rest. Just when this ambition was about realized he was taken ill and grew gradually worse until he passed away peacefully on the above date.
John H. Mattocks was born in Illyria township, Jan. 31, 1870. He was the son of Wilder M. and Anna E. Mattocks. On Feb. 24, 1909, he united in marriage to Miss Ida Rothlisberger. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and an adopted daughter; one brother, William of Wadena; two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Curtis of Jennings, Okla., and Mrs. John Johnson of Elgin, besides a host of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the Illyria church on Wednesday and interment was made in the cemetery there. The last rites were largely attended, the church being unable to hold all who had come to pay a last tribute of respect.
