Elgin Echo, Thur., 22 March 1917. (condensed).

David Moats, for many years a resident of Illyria township and then Elgin, is dead. He had spent a long, active and useful life, and until a short time ago had retained all his senses except hearing, he being quite deaf.

Mr. Moats was born Nov. 29, 1818, in Franklin Co., PA., and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tom Kerr of Waterloo, March 17, 1917. When 8 years old he moved with his parents to Ohio, where he was educated, and married Miss Lydia Clapper on April 12, 1843, at Richland, Ohio. In 1851 they came to Iowa, settling on a farm in Clayton Co., where they lived until March 1, 1899, when they moved to Elgin, Iowa, where they made their home until the death of Mrs. Moats on March 14, 1912. Since that time Mr. Moats has made his home with his children. They were the parents of 14 children of whom 9 survive: Ambrose of Scotch Grove; Stewart of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Tom Kerr of Waterloo; Lyman of Eagle Grove; Mrs. J. C. Miller of Minneapolis; Mrs. Joseph Butler of Elgin; A. L. of Volga City; and Charles of Minnesota. There are 48 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren to remember him as head of their family.

The funeral services were held at the Illyria church with interment beside his wife in the family lot in Illyria cemetery. A large number of relatives, neighbors and friends were present to pay a last tribute of respect to one they had known so well in life.
