Elgin Echo, Thur., 5 April 1917.

The death of Henry Erickson , who resided with his parents a short distance east of town, occurred Sunday night. When the word was brought to town Monday morning it caused much sorrow, for he was known to all as a straight-forward, industrious young man. Few knew of his illness and those who did thought that he was suffering with an attack of tonsillitis. Dr. Fothergill was the first called on the case Friday morning and found the patient suffering with a very severe attack of suppurative tonsillitis. The patient responded to treatment and on Saturday seemed to be much improved. Sunday morning the doctor found the patient in a desperate condition and advised the family, that in his opinion, diptheria had developed. Dr. Carr of Clermont was called in consultation and the two doctors did everything that medical skill could suggest. The diagnosis of both physicians was diphtheria and they administered antitoxin and put forth every effort to save the young man's life, but to no avail, as
he passed away at 11:30 Sunday night, his death being due to a weak heart which gradually failed until the end came.

Henry was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John Erickson, residing east of town and was 25 years old in February. Being the only child his sudden death is a severe blow to the heart broken parents who have the most sincere sympathy of all in this community.

Burial was made Wednesday noon. The home has been quarantined and a neighboring school closed in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease.

The diagnosis of DRs. Fothergill and Carr, as diphtheria, in the Henry Erickson case, was confirmed by the state board of health, to whom a sample of mucous had been sent.
