John Howard - The Hunter - Dead.

John Howard was born in Mercer county, Penn., in 1817. In 1840 he was united in marriage to Mary Eikhorn. In 1854 he came to Iowa where he settled on a farm near Elgin and there resided until the time of his death, which occurred Nov. 17, 1899.

Through the death of John Howard Fayette county has lost another of her pioneer characters. One of that class of men who no longer have a place in society. Those of them who are left are the bards and legend bearers to us from bygone days: time travelers who tell of conditions and incidents which have never been recorded with pen. Of this class of men was John Howard. He was loved and respected as an honest man. He was trusted and relied upon as he never failed to do what he said he would do. He was a man.
