Joseph Ogle was born May 14, 1828, in Carroll county, Ohio, and died at his home in Illyria township, Fayette County, Iowa, August 28, 1899, at the advanced age of 71 years, 3 months and 14 days. The deceased was married at the place of his birth to Sarah Barnhouse in June, 1852, and emigrated from there to Fayette County, Iowa, in the fall of 1858, where he settled and has since resided until the time of his death. Of the children born to this union six are now living, Mesdames Wickham, Prouty and Foster, of Elkader, Mrs. Shafer, of Elgin, Mrs. Peters, of Highland, and Mr. Fremont Ogle, of Illyria township; besides these the wife and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Lucas, of Fayette County, and Mrs. Isabel Burrier, of Carroll County, Ohio, remain to mourn the loss of the departed. Since June, Mrs. Burrier has been present with her brother to assist in his last sickness. Mr. Ogle has been practically helpless for several years and a great sufferer from rheumatic trouble, which he bore with great fortitude.

Early in life Joseph Ogle united with the Presbyterian church and has always consistently clung to that branch of the Christian church in which he was reared. The funeral was conducted from the Illyria church, Rev. Matt Wing, of Elkader, preaching the sermon. A large number of neighbors and friends were in attendance in memory of the deceased, who was known and admired for his sterling worth as an honest, upright man. Interment in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Joseph Ogle was a plain, unpretending man, outspoken in speech, yet with a nobility of character and tenderness of heart that endeared him not only at home but to all who knew him intimately; with courage to declare his convictions, he conceded to others the right to their own belief, and exacted of them no more than in consistency they asked of him.
