Elgin Echo, Thur., 31 July 1909.

Alonson Ely was born in Oneida Co., New York, on the 28th day of August 1837, and died at his home in Elgin, Iowa, on July 22nd, 1909, aged 71 years, 10 months and 24 days. On Jan. 1st, 1866, he was married to Irene Ernst, and to them was born one daughter, Mrs. Stella Dimond, of Kensington, Kansas.

Some 25 years ago Mr. Ely made Elgin his home. At different times during this period he has been engaged in different mercantile pursuits, he at one time having conducted a general store and at another time he was engaged in the hardware business. He finally retired from active business and for years has led a retired life.

Mr. Ely was one of those men who makes friends easily. He was whole souled and an agreeable companion always looking on the bright side of everything. For some years he has been bothered with his eyes and failing sight compelled him to live a more retired life than was his wont. He was a man who was well liked and respected by his many acquaintances and in his death Elgin loses one of her old and respected citizens. For over 45 years he had been a member of the Masonic order.

Mr. Ely is survived by his wife, his daughter, two grandsons, one granddaughter, two sisters, Mrs. Lettie Kinsley, of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Mrs. Juliet Hammond, of Winter Park, Va., one brother Ashley Ely, of Rock Rapids, and a large number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral services were held at the home on Saturday, July 24th, at three o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. R. V. Porter, of the Methodist Episcopal church, where a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to a friend and neighbor. The interment was made in the Elgin cemetery.
