Elgin Echo, Thur., 19 Aug. 1909.

Without a moments warning and while apparently in her usual health Mrs. John R. Patterson succumbed to the inevitable Monday morning at about nine o'clock. She had been at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. W. Muehlenthaler, where she had spent the night. When on her way to her home, which is about three quarters of a mile distant, rain clouds appeared and it is thought she hurried and became excited in trying to reach her house before the rain fell. She reached her home and going to the back of the house had just entered the summer kitchen when she fell to the floor and expired. The Schori children were with her and when she fell they rushed home quickly and informed their mother, who, with other neighbors and friends, went to her assistance immediately but the stricken lady was beyond earthly help.

The sad tidings soon spread among our citizens and expressions of sorrow and regret were heard on every hand.

The death of Mrs. Patterson was caused by heart failure. Although not generally known she has been troubled by a weak heart for some years, but no sign or symptom of a change for the worse had been noted and her sudden death was a great shock, not only to relatives, but to the entire community.

Catherine Josephine Barnhouse was born at Port Washington, Ohio, on October 17, 1846, of a family of two brothers and two sisters, only one of whom survives - a sister, living at Columbus, Ohio. In company with her parents she came to Appanoose county, Iowa, in 1851, and at the age of seven years she was left an orphan. On June 15, 1865, she was united in marriage to John R. Patterson and they settled on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are now living, Elver and Ira, of Ohio, Mrs. Chas Feller, Mrs. R. W. Muehlenthaler and Miss Sadie, all of Elgin. About eleven years ago, with her family, she came to Elgin to reside and on November 22, 1905, the husband and father passed away after a brief illness from pneumonia.

Mrs. Patterson was a devoted wife, a kind and wise mother and a good neighbor. She was a woman who was well liked and respected by a large circle of friends and the memory of her many kind deeds to those who sorrow and need will ever be cherished by those who knew and loved her best.

The funeral services will be held at the German Baptist Church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Porter of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating, and interment will be made in the Elgin cemetery.
