William Dickinson was born in Lincolnshire, England, April 23, 1832, and died at his home in Elgin, April 13, 1909, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 21 days, after a long and painful illness. He was married to Miss Anne Dickinson in February 1855, who died December 13, 1875, leaving eight children. On the 7th of February 1879 he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Martha J. Hammond.

He came to Iowa in 1855 where he spent thirteen years in Clayton county. He has been a resident of Fayette county for about forty-one years. Mr. Dickinson was a prosperous farmer, which occupation he followed for many years. After retiring he came to Elgin where he has made his home for the past ten years.

He leaves besides his widow, one son, Joe Dickinson, of Fayette, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary A. Dye, of Comstock, Nebraska; Mrs. Jennie Davis, of La Harpe, Kansas; Mrs. Lillie M. Connor, of Rolette, North Dakota; and Mrs. Cassie E. Conner, of Pleasant Valley, who mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father, also a host of friends who grieve over the loss of a true friend and the departure of a truly good man.

Mr. Dickinson has for years been identified with the church and church work. He was a true Christian and lived a life in harmony with his belief. He had a wide acquaintance and was well known as an upright honest man.

Friends will gather at the home today,(Thursday), April 15, at 11:30 o'clock, where short services will be held. The remains will then be taken to the Illyria church where services will be held at 2:00 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Illyria cemetery.
